Why did my crock pot explode?

It exploded because it was not meant for stove top cooking. Ceramics do not conduct heat like metal does. The heat from the bottom and the cooler temp of what was inside and you have an accident waiting to happen. Unless any utensil is listed as stove top safe, or oven safe, use it only for what it was made for.
