Is it me or when you look at movies made in the black and white era, not one person is muscly or ripped?

Like you look at films now and the action hero's are always huge (arnold, hugh jackman, vin diesel) but when you watch a film around the 40 - 50s era nobody is lol :S there like half in shape half out, its really wweird
