What is the difference between hazing and initiation?

An initiation means bringing someone new into a group. The word itself is generally not considered bad or negative. Hazing is a form of initiation, but is very often frowned upon. Hazing used to be popular on college campuses and places like that, but over the years things got out of control, students were seriously injured, some even died. I believe hazing is actually banned on most college campuses, at least it is here in the USA. An initiation can be harmless.
